Your first hive inspection is exciting, and a little nerve-wracking. The best way to feel calm is to be properly prepared. Bees pick up on a nervous beekeeper, and being well protected lets you slow down and focus. Use this checklist to get ready.
The essentials
- A veil, jacket or full suit: a beekeeping suit with veil gives full-body protection, while a ventilated jacket with veil covers your upper body.
- Sting-resistant gloves: choose a pair that fits well so you can still handle frames comfortably. See our beekeeping gloves.
- Long, sturdy trousers: especially if you wear a jacket instead of a full suit.
- Closed boots: wear them over your trousers or secure the cuffs so bees cannot crawl up your legs.
Helpful extras
- A hive tool for separating boxes and frames.
- A smoker with fuel to calm the colony.
- A soft brush for gently moving bees off frames.
Small habits that make a big difference
- Wear light-coloured clothing under your gear. Light colours are commonly recommended for working bees.
- Avoid strong scents. Perfume and heavily scented products can attract attention.
- Check every gap. Zip up fully and make sure your veil is secure before you approach the hive.
- Move slowly and calmly. Sudden movements make bees defensive.
Before you start
If you have a known allergy to bee stings, talk to a doctor before keeping bees. It also helps to have an experienced beekeeper or a local association mentor with you for your first few inspections.
